Building A Special Dollhouse

The housing boom of the last decade had created a vast market of those who love to decorate. While home decorating has emerged as a popular hobby over the past several years, a miniature version of the same hobby has layed quietly dormant.

It is a hobby that if most people discovered, they would be come quite addicted. Miniature furniture and dollhouses accessories are big business and the amount of items out there is quite staggering. You can pretty much build yourself any type of home from mid-century modern to Victorian mansion and fill it with period-appropriate wares. Museums exist that are devoted to the subject of miniatures which tells us that people just love small things!

Most hobbyists that have discovered the hobby build their dollhouses using doll house kits. These miniature homes come in a variety of period styles and levels of quality. Our favorite kits are made from 3/8″ thick plywood or Medium Density Fiberboard that allow durability over the years.

Take note, while dollhouses are commonly associated with children, these dollhouses differ substantially from their Fisher Price counterparts. Many of the components are small (definitely not for children under 3 years old) and very pricey and are something to be admired from a distance (sorry, no touching allowed). If you would like to build a dollhouse and have children, consider adding a plexiglass screen to close off the backside from curious hands.

Lastly, don’t forget to have fun with the exterior of the dollhouse, Adding miniature trees and dollhouse miniature flowers are a great way to make this house feel like home.
